定語(yǔ)從句在句中做定語(yǔ),修飾一個(gè)名詞或代詞,被修飾的名詞詞組或代詞即先行詞。定語(yǔ)從句通常
出現(xiàn)在先行詞之后,由關(guān)系詞(關(guān)系代詞或關(guān)系副詞)引出。
關(guān)系代詞有:who, whom, whose, that, which等。
關(guān)系副詞有:when, where, why等。
18.1 關(guān)系代詞引導(dǎo)的定語(yǔ)從句
關(guān)系代詞所代替的先行詞是人或物的名詞或代詞,并在句中充當(dāng)主語(yǔ)、賓語(yǔ)、定語(yǔ)等成分。關(guān)系代詞在定語(yǔ)從句中作主語(yǔ)時(shí),從句謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞的人稱和數(shù)要和先行詞保持一致。
1)who, whom, that
這些詞代替的先行詞是人的名詞或代詞,在從句中作主語(yǔ)和賓語(yǔ)。例如:
Is he the man who/that wants to see you? 他就是你想見(jiàn)的人嗎?(who/that在從句中作主語(yǔ))
He is the man whom/ that I saw yesterday. 他就是我昨天見(jiàn)的那個(gè)人。(whom/that在從句中作賓語(yǔ))
2) whose 用來(lái)指人或物,(只用作定語(yǔ), 若指物,它還可以同of which互換)。例如:
They rushed over to help the man whose car had broken down. 那人車(chē)壞了,大家都跑過(guò)去幫忙。
Please pass me the book whose (of which) cover is green. 請(qǐng)遞給我那本綠皮的書(shū)。
3)which, that所代替的先行詞是事物的名詞或代詞,在從句中可作主語(yǔ)、賓語(yǔ)等。例如:
A prosperity which / that had never been seen before appears in the countryside.

18.2 關(guān)系副詞引導(dǎo)的定語(yǔ)從句
關(guān)系副詞可代替的先行詞是時(shí)間、地點(diǎn)或理由的名詞,在從句中作狀語(yǔ)。
1)關(guān)系副詞when, where, why的含義相當(dāng)于"介詞+ which"結(jié)構(gòu),因此常常和"介詞+ which"結(jié)構(gòu)交替使用。例如:
There are occasions when (on which) one must yield. 任何人都有不得不屈服的時(shí)候。
Beijing is the place where(in which) I was born. 北京是我的出生地。
Is this the reason why (for which) he refused our offer? 這就是他拒絕我們幫助他的理由嗎?
2)that代替關(guān)系副詞,可以用于表示時(shí)間、地點(diǎn)、方式、理由的名詞后取代when, where, why和"介+which"引導(dǎo)的定語(yǔ)從句,在口語(yǔ)中that常被省略。例如:
His father died the year (that / when / in which) he was born. 他父親在他出生那年逝世了。
He is unlikely to find the place (that / where / in which) he lived forty years ago.
他不大可能找到他四十年前居住過(guò)的地方。
18.3 判斷關(guān)系代詞與關(guān)系副詞
方法一: 用關(guān)系代詞,還是關(guān)系副詞完全取決于從句中的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞。及物動(dòng)詞后面無(wú)賓語(yǔ),就必須要求用關(guān)系代詞;而不及物動(dòng)詞則要求用關(guān)系副詞。例如:
This is the mountain village where I stayed last year. 這是我去年呆過(guò)的山村。
I'll never forget the days when I worked together with you.我永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)忘記與你共事的日子。
判斷改錯(cuò):
(錯(cuò)) This is the mountain village where I visited last year.
(錯(cuò)) I will never forget the days when I spent in the countryside.
(對(duì)) This is the mountain village (which) I visited last year.
(對(duì)) I'll never forget the days (which) I spent in the countryside.
習(xí)慣上總把表地點(diǎn)或時(shí)間的名詞與關(guān)系副詞 where, when聯(lián)系在一起。此兩題錯(cuò)在關(guān)系詞的誤用上。
方法二: 準(zhǔn)確判斷先行詞在定語(yǔ)從句中的成分(主、謂、賓、定、狀),也能正確選擇出關(guān)系代詞/關(guān)系副詞。
例1. Is this museum ___ you visited a few days age?
A. where B. that C. on which D. the one
例2. Is this the museum ____ the exhibition was held.
A. where B. that C. on which D. the one
答案:例1 D,例2 A
例1變?yōu)榭隙ň洌?This museum is ___ you visited a few days ago.
例2變?yōu)榭隙ň洌?This is the museum ___ the exhibition was held.
在句1中,所缺部分為賓語(yǔ),而where, that, on which都不能起到賓語(yǔ)的作用,只有the one既做了主句的表語(yǔ),又可做從句的賓語(yǔ),可以省略關(guān)系代詞,所以應(yīng)選D。
而句2中, 主、謂、賓俱全,從句部分為句子的狀語(yǔ)表地點(diǎn),既可用副詞where,又因 in the museum詞組,可用介詞in + which 引導(dǎo)地點(diǎn)狀語(yǔ)。而此題中,介詞on 用的不對(duì),所以選A。
關(guān)系詞的選擇依據(jù)在從句中所做的成分,先行詞在從句中做主、定、賓語(yǔ)時(shí),選擇關(guān)系代詞(who, whom, that, which, whose); 先行詞在從句中做狀語(yǔ)時(shí),應(yīng)選擇關(guān)系副詞 ( where 地點(diǎn)狀語(yǔ),when 時(shí)間狀語(yǔ),why 原因狀語(yǔ)) 。
18.4 限制性和非限制性定語(yǔ)從句
1) 定語(yǔ)從句有限制性和非限制性兩種。限制性定語(yǔ)從句是先行詞不可缺少的部分,去掉它主句意思往往不明確;非限制性定語(yǔ)從句是先行詞的附加說(shuō)明,去掉了也不會(huì)影響主句的意思,它與主句之間通常用逗號(hào)分開(kāi)。例如:
This is the house which we bought last month. 這是我們上個(gè)月買(mǎi)的那幢房子。(限制性)
The house, which we bought last month, is very nice.
這幢房子很漂亮,是我們上個(gè)月買(mǎi)的。(非限制性)
2) 當(dāng)先行詞是專有名詞或物主代詞和指示代詞所修飾時(shí),其后的定語(yǔ)從句通常是非限制性的。例如:
Charles Smith, who was my former teacher, retired last year.
查理?史密斯去年退休了,他曾經(jīng)是我的老師。
My house, which I bought last year, has got a lovely garden.
我去年買(mǎi)的的那幢房子帶著個(gè)漂亮的花園。
This novel, which I have read three times, is very touching. 這本小說(shuō)很動(dòng)人,我已經(jīng)讀了三遍。
3) 非限制性定語(yǔ)從句還能將整個(gè)主句作為先行詞, 對(duì)其進(jìn)行修飾, 這時(shí)從句謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞要用第三人稱單數(shù)。例如:
He seems not to have grasped what I meant, which greatly upsets me.
他似乎沒(méi)抓住我的意思,這使我心煩。
Liquid water changes to vapor, which is called evaporation. 液態(tài)水變?yōu)檎羝,這就叫做蒸發(fā)。
說(shuō)明:關(guān)系代詞that和關(guān)系副詞why不能引導(dǎo)非限制性定語(yǔ)從句。
18.5 介詞+關(guān)系詞
1)介詞后面的關(guān)系詞不能省略。
2)that前不能有介詞。
3)某些在從句中充當(dāng)時(shí)間,地點(diǎn)或原因狀語(yǔ)的"介詞+關(guān)系詞"結(jié)構(gòu)可以同關(guān)系副詞when 和where 互換。例如:
This is the house in which I lived two years ago. 這是我兩年前住過(guò)的房子。
This is the house where I lived two years ago.
Do you remember the day on which you joined our club? 還記得你加入我們俱樂(lè)部的那一天嗎?
Do you remember the day when you joined our club?
18.6 as, which 非限定性定語(yǔ)從句
由as, which 引導(dǎo)的非限定性定語(yǔ)從句,as和which可代整個(gè)主句,相當(dāng)于and this或and that。As一般放在句首,which在句中。例如:
As we know, smoking is harmful to one's health. 如我們所知,吸煙有害健康。
The sun heats the earth, which is very important to us. 太陽(yáng)使地球暖起來(lái),這對(duì)我們?nèi)祟惡苤匾?/p>
典型例題
1)Alice received an invitation from her boss, ___came as a surprise.
A. it B. that C. which D. he
答案C. 此為非限定性從句,不能用 that修飾,而用which.,it 和he 都使后句成為句子,兩個(gè)獨(dú)立的句子不能單以逗號(hào)連接。況且選he句意不通。
2)The weather turned out to be very good, ___ was more than we could expect.
A. what B. which C. that D. it
答案B。which可代替句子,用于非限定性定語(yǔ)從句,而what不可。That 不能用于非限定性定語(yǔ)從句,it不為連詞,使由逗號(hào)連接的兩個(gè)句子并在一起在英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)法上行不通。

(1)as 引導(dǎo)的定語(yǔ)從句可置于句首,而which不可。

1)句型練習(xí):做這項(xiàng)練習(xí)時(shí),可以把句型、詞匯及語(yǔ)法三項(xiàng)結(jié)合起來(lái)。這方面有不少國(guó)內(nèi)外出版的句型練習(xí)教科書(shū)及錄音帶,如:《英語(yǔ)九百句》(English900)和《情景對(duì)話》(SituationalDialogues),鄧炎昌編的《英語(yǔ)會(huì)話五十題》和鄧榮成編譯的《實(shí)用英語(yǔ)問(wèn)答》等。這些課本編排比較科學(xué),由淺入深,循序漸進(jìn),照顧到生活常用詞匯和句型,耐用做到了關(guān)鍵句型反復(fù)出現(xiàn)。配合課本錄制的磁帶質(zhì)量也很好,幾乎都包括速度較慢的跟讀和重復(fù)練習(xí)。

1)聽(tīng)美國(guó)之音(VOA)慢速?gòu)V播(VOASPECIALENGLISHPROGRAM)或英國(guó)廣播公司(BBC)英語(yǔ)廣播(BBCENGLISHBYRADIO):這兩個(gè)節(jié)目速度較慢,在詞匯選擇上也有適當(dāng)控制,因此作為訓(xùn)練聽(tīng)外臺(tái)的起步練習(xí)是很合適的。開(kāi)始時(shí)可根據(jù)自己熟悉的工英國(guó)或美國(guó)音來(lái)選聽(tīng)BBC或VOA,然后逐步向另一臺(tái)過(guò)渡。在聽(tīng)這兩種特殊節(jié)目毫無(wú)困難之后,就可轉(zhuǎn)向正常速度的英美電臺(tái)廣播。電臺(tái)廣播和報(bào)刊雜志的'內(nèi)容是緊密聯(lián)系在一起的。因此,在進(jìn)行這一訓(xùn)練的同時(shí),應(yīng)閱讀一些英文報(bào)刊雜志。

虛擬語(yǔ)氣(Subjunctive Mood)這一項(xiàng)目是各類中心測(cè)試的重點(diǎn)之一。虛擬語(yǔ)氣是一種特殊的動(dòng)詞形式,用來(lái)表示說(shuō)話人所說(shuō)的話并不是事實(shí),而是一種假設(shè)、愿望、懷疑或推測(cè)。
、裼靡员硎咎摂M條件的虛擬語(yǔ)氣
、 用if條件從句表示的虛擬條件,是虛擬條件最普通的方式。
、 虛擬現(xiàn)在時(shí)表示與現(xiàn)在事實(shí)相反的假設(shè),其if 從句的謂語(yǔ)形式用動(dòng)詞的過(guò)去式(be 一般用were),主句用would/ should/ could/ might +動(dòng)詞原形,例如:If I were in your position I would marry her.
② 虛擬過(guò)去時(shí)是表示與過(guò)去事實(shí)相反的假設(shè),if 從句的謂語(yǔ)形式用過(guò)去完成時(shí)即had+過(guò)去分詞,主句用would / should / could / might + have +過(guò)去分詞,例如:If it had not rained so hard yesterday we could have played tennis.
、 大多數(shù)的虛擬條件句屬于上面三種情況的一種,但并不排除存在條件和后果中,一個(gè)和現(xiàn)在情況相反,另一個(gè)和過(guò)去情況相反,例如:If you had followed what the doctor said, you would not have been so painful now.這個(gè)句子在出現(xiàn)頻率頗高。
、 但是,如果后果用了虛擬語(yǔ)氣,而條件卻用陳述語(yǔ)氣,這種用法是錯(cuò)的。
、 除了表示虛假條件外,if從句還可以表示對(duì)將來(lái)的推測(cè),由于是將來(lái)還沒(méi)有發(fā)生的,所以談不上是真實(shí)的還是虛假的,只能說(shuō)這個(gè)事情發(fā)生的可能性有多大。一般情況下,可以用陳述語(yǔ)氣的if從句來(lái)表示對(duì)一個(gè)未來(lái)事實(shí)的推測(cè),這個(gè)事實(shí)是完全可能發(fā)生的。If從句的謂語(yǔ)形式用一般過(guò)去式或用were to / should +動(dòng)詞原形,主句用would / should /could/ might +動(dòng)詞原形,例如:Jean doesn't want to work right away because she thinks that if she were to get a job she probably wouldn't be able to see her friends very often.(1996年1月四級(jí)第44題)
、 有時(shí)可以把含有助動(dòng)詞、情態(tài)動(dòng)詞、be或have的虛擬條件句中的連詞if 省去,而將had , should, were 等詞提到主語(yǔ)之前,即用倒裝結(jié)構(gòu),這時(shí)候,如果出現(xiàn)not等否定詞,否定詞需放在主語(yǔ)后面。這種結(jié)構(gòu)在口語(yǔ)中很少使用,但頻頻出現(xiàn)在各類考試中出現(xiàn),例如:If it had not rained so hard yesterday we could have played tennis.→Had it not rained so hard yesterday, we could have played tennis.
、 大多數(shù)的虛擬條件通過(guò)上面所講的兩種表達(dá),但在個(gè)別句子中也可以通過(guò)介詞without和介詞短語(yǔ)but for表達(dá),副詞otherwise等表達(dá)出來(lái)。例如:We didn't know his telephone number; otherwise we would have telephoned him.(1995年6月四級(jí)第46題)值得注意的是,包含but for的句子,謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞必定要用虛擬形式,但包含without等短語(yǔ)的句子,謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞未必一定要用虛擬語(yǔ)氣。
、 有時(shí)虛擬條件不是明確地表達(dá)出來(lái),而在蘊(yùn)含在用but引導(dǎo)的從句里,于是便出現(xiàn)了有謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞是虛擬語(yǔ)氣的主句加上謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞是陳述語(yǔ)氣的but從句構(gòu)成的并列復(fù)合句,例如I would have hung you but the telephone was out of order.在這樣的句子里,如果主句沒(méi)有用虛擬語(yǔ)氣,或者從句用了虛擬語(yǔ)氣,都是錯(cuò)的。
、蛴迷谫e語(yǔ)從句中的虛擬語(yǔ)氣
、 在表示愿望的動(dòng)詞wish后的賓語(yǔ)從句中,需用虛擬語(yǔ)氣。(wish后的that 常省略),根據(jù)主句時(shí)態(tài),從句謂語(yǔ)時(shí)態(tài)相應(yīng)退后一位,例如:How she wished his family could go with him.
⒉ 在具有愿望、請(qǐng)求、建議、命令等主觀意愿的動(dòng)詞(desire, demand, advice, insist, require, suggest, propose, order, recommend, decide …) 后的賓語(yǔ)從句中需用虛擬語(yǔ)氣。謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用(should) +動(dòng)詞原形。值得注意的是,如果賓語(yǔ)從句的動(dòng)詞是否定的,否定詞not的位置應(yīng)在動(dòng)詞之前,而不是動(dòng)詞之后。例如:The head nurse insisted that the patient not be move.另外,如suggest表達(dá)“暗示”,insist表示“堅(jiān)持某種說(shuō)法”時(shí),后面的從句不用虛擬語(yǔ)氣,例如:Her pale face suggests that she is ill.或He insisted that he did not kill the boy.
除此之外,上述動(dòng)詞也要求用虛擬式
、 在It is+上述動(dòng)詞的過(guò)去分詞,其后所跟的主語(yǔ)從句中,如It is suggested that pupils wear school uniforms.
② 在上述動(dòng)詞相應(yīng)的名詞形式作主語(yǔ)+連系動(dòng)詞,其后的表語(yǔ)從句中,例如His suggestion was that classed be re-scheduled.
③ 在對(duì)上述動(dòng)詞相應(yīng)的名詞進(jìn)行解釋的同位語(yǔ)從句中,如:The workers raised the demand that their pay be increased to cope with the inflation.
⒊ would (had)rather , would sooner也用來(lái)表達(dá)主觀愿望,它們之后的賓語(yǔ)從句中需用虛擬語(yǔ)氣。謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用過(guò)去式表示現(xiàn)在或?qū)?lái),用過(guò)去完成式表示與過(guò)去事實(shí)相反,例如:I would rather he went right now.
Ⅲ其他形式的虛擬語(yǔ)氣
、 it is +necessary等形容詞后,that主語(yǔ)從句中虛擬形式使用,這類形容詞包括necessary, important, essential, imperative, urgent, preferable, vital, advisable等,例如It is necessary that you listen to the teacher carefully.或者It is essential that you be able to pronounce every single word correctly.
、 在It's (high/about) time 之后的定語(yǔ)從句中需用虛擬語(yǔ)氣。謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用過(guò)去式,例如It is high time that you went to school
